Tips on identifying your tractor:
Sears Tractors model numbers always begin with 917. followed by another four, five or six digits. Every manufacturer has their own prefix similar to the "917" that Sears used. For a list of some manufacturer codes click here or on the "Manufacturer Codes" button on the main menu.
In the 60's and 70's Sears basically built three different types of tractors that are covered on this website. The Custom (1964 - 1979), 1st Generation Suburban (1959 - 1965) and 2nd Generation Suburban (1966 - 1979).
Sears Tractors all have an Identification number that is commonly stamped or screen printed on the Shift Plate. This number can help you identify what year and model your tractor is. Unfortunately the screen printing on the shifter plate tends to fade over time, especially if the tractor is kept outside. If you do find your model number, just click on the appropriate link in the menu for the type of tractor you have and find it in the list. If you have a model number that is not listed CLICK HERE let me know and I'll try and help you identify it.
If your model number is not available you may still be able to find the year by the engine number. Tecumseh, who produced a lot of engines for the Sears tractors, stamped a date code on the engine block. Of course this will only help you if your engine is the original engine. If you have the numbers off of your engine CLICK HERE for info found in the Tecumseh Technicians' Handbook
